Juke Joint Kings
The Juke Joint Kings bring you the best in blues and juke joint R n B!
Taking their name from a broad collective term for their musical heroes, the Juke Joint Kings formed in 2015 following an advert in a local music shop reading “Grumpy drummer seeks blues band”!
The others, having met through ‘Blues Sunday’, a monthly electro-acoustic blues open mic hosted by multiple blues award nominee Half-Deaf Clatch), then found a venue for regular electric blues jams.
Over the past five years, Juke Joint Kings have become regulars on the Northern blues scene, playing the Burton Agnes Jazz and Blues Festival, and Great British Rhythm and Blues Festivals, and supporting acts such as The Della Grants, Tom Attah and the Bad Man Clan, The Revolutionaires and Keep It Cash.
After their debut recording, ‘Live at the Stonemasons’ received warm praise (“Quality in every department”; Tom Walker Blues Matters issue 95), the band were encouraged to record an album of original material, resulting in ‘Riding with the Juke Joint Kings’. To capture the energy of a live performance, tracks were recorded ‘old school, as an entire band, in a single studio take, and has again been highly praised in Blues Matters (issue 105), as well as receiving worldwide airplay.
The Juke Joint Kings (Brian Williams (harp), Graham Hyde (guitar), Sara Saunders (bass), Chris Saunders (vocals), Steve Lawley (drums)) continue to write and perform tracks by their inspirations, including B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Otis Rush, Sonny Boy Williams, Howlin’ Wolf and John Lee Hooker, planning to release album three in 2021, which will be another serving of high energy blues.
